Georgia is in the top 10 in workplace fatalities

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently put out the data for occupational deaths in 2015, and the report is called the National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. It compared the numbers for 2015 and 2014, allowing researchers to see trends all over the country.

One thing that they found was that Georgia was in the top ten. At the top of list was Texas, followed by California and Florida to round out the top three. Below those leaders came New York, and Ohio. Georgia was sixth overall, and the rest of the top ten included Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Carolina and Michigan.

From a national perspective, there were more workplace deaths in 2015 than in 2014, though the rise was not much. In 2014, there were 4,821 fatal incidents. In 2015, the number came in at 4,836. That's a jump of just 15 deaths.

Both numbers are well down from 2008, when the total clocked in at 5,214. Still, since things had dropped from that mark, officials were not hoping to see them trending back up again, even slightly.

Leading industries in which fatalities occurred included heavy truck driving, with 745 deaths in 2015, and private construction, with 937 deaths. In 2008, there were 975 deaths in the construction industry, so the mark from 2015 was the highest since that deadly year.

Have you lost a loved one on the job? If so, no matter what industry he or she worked it, you may be entitled to compensation. Even if you were simply injured, but you survived the incident, make sure you know what rights you have to workers' compensation in Georgia.
