3 common causes of slip-and-fall accidents

Slip and falls are some of the most injurious accidents that happen. Every case is different, but there are some recurring commonalities that indicate a pattern of causation. According to Newsday, the prevalence of these accidents has even motivated the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration to pass new safety standards. The updated regulations will hopefully help prevent the many accidents that occur every year as a result of these three common contributing factors.

Inclement weather conditions

Rain, sleet and snow drastically inflate the likelihood of slip-and-fall accidents. Though organizations obviously cannot control such weather, it is their responsibility to reasonably prevent conditions from creating unsafe floor surfaces. When people neglect their duty to make areas safe, and an accident occurs, it can be disastrous. Businesses should take precautions such as rolling out mats and mopping standing water in order to prevent this.

Improper training in the workplace

Many slip-and-fall accidents take place in industrial and warehouse environments. There are hazards in every workplace, though. Whether people work in food service or an office, they should be made aware of any conditions which might increase the likelihood of a slip and fall. Employers make such accidents far more likely when they fail to train staff on proper safety protocol, including prevention and proper footwear.

Footwear that is dangerous

Naturally, six-inch stilettos are not the safest shoe choice. Indeed, heels may easily compromise balance, as well as failing to provide traction on smooth or slick floor surfaces. Many other kinds of shoes lack good treads, too, though, particularly those worn in a business or business casual environment. Even if the soles began with good grip, repeated wear destroys traction. Still, a fall that involves unsafe footwear is not necessarily the fault of the wearer since shoes are typically only one contributing factor.

Because traumatic brain injuries, broken bones and soft tissue damage are common results of a slip and fall, medical bills can be quite extensive. Many people turn to an attorney for assistance in holding all responsible parties accountable.
