Ground-level falls can be fatal for the elderly

The autumn leaves are beautiful, but they can be dangerous. When they are on sidewalks and in parking lots, there is a risk that they will cause pedestrians to slip and fall. This can be problematic for many people; however, the elderly are at a great risk of suffering from catastrophic or fatal injuries even from low levels.

Elderly adults who fall while on ground level, which means from a standing position, are more likely to suffer a serious injury than younger adults who have the same fall. People who are 70-years-old or older are three times more likely to die than others.

Many people think that these ground-level falls are harmless since they occur so often. Even if a person who falls is able to get up on their own right away, there is still a chance that an injury has occurred. It is possible to break a bone, strain a muscle or have something else wrong.

In a study that was done, it was found that 4.5 percent of people 70 and older who are in a ground level-fall die, but the rate for younger people is only 1.5 percent. Only around 22 percent of elderly patients who have to go to the hospital can function without assistance when they are discharged. This is much lower than the 41 percent of younger people who are in the same situation.

Regardless of your age, you do have rights if you are injured on another person's property. If negligence was part of the problem, filing a personal injury claim based on premises liability might be in order.
