The 3 types of distracted driving

Did you know that there are really just three different types of distracted driving?

You may feel like you can name far more just off the top of your head. Maybe you're thinking of things like texting and driving, eating and driving, talking to passengers, changing the radio station, interacting with children or gawking at accidents.

It's true that those are all different examples of distracted driving, and they're things that happen every day in Georgia. However, all of them can be divided into three main categories:

  1. Visual distractions: These include looking down to text or gawking at an accident. You should never look away from the road while you are driving the car.
  2. Manual distractions: These include reaching to pick up something you dropped on the floor or typing a text message. You should never let go of the wheel while the car is in motion.
  3. Mental (cognitive) distractions: These are often the hardest to avoid, as they can include things like thinking about what you want to say, worrying about various aspects of life or just letting your mind wander. As you drive, you always need to be thinking about driving and staying in control of your car, but it's often difficult to keep your mind focused on that task.

All of the more specific examples -- like texting and driving -- can get sorted into these categories, and they are all very dangerous. If you suffer serious injuries because of a mistake made by another driver, make sure you are well aware of the rights you have to financial compensation.
