What should I know about making an accident claim?

Nobody wants to get into a car accident in Georgia. It can be a real hassle to deal with the aftermath, especially when it comes to filing your accident claim with an insurance company. Whether you have to deal with your own insurance or the other party’s insurance company, the process is usually far from easy. You will have a lot of hurdles to jump before you reach the end of things.

Money Crashers explains that the goal of an insurance company is to limit its expenses, so you are going to be in a constant battle to get what is rightfully owed to you. Be ready to back up anything you claim with evidence.

That starts with showing who was at fault. At the scene of the accident, you need to take pictures of the vehicles and the area before anything moves. You should talk to witnesses and get their contact information. You also need to get as much information as you can from the other driver, including all the information about the vehicle, contact information and insurance information.

You will contact your insurance company first. Your insurer may handle everything for you from this point. You may have to do an interview where you give the facts about what happened with the other person’s insurance company.

It is a smart idea before talking to anyone from an insurance company that you know how much your car is worth if it requires a total replacement or how much repairs are going to cost. You should gather your own documentation to back up your numbers.

As long as you have information and evidence in hand, you should find dealing with the insurance companies goes smoothly. It is usually not being prepared that leaves you vulnerable and allows the insurance company to take advantage of you. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
