If you get pulled over, you may wonder what is in store for you. You may also wonder what the next steps are.

By making sure that you understand field sobriety tests in Georgia, as well as DUIs you can help ensure that you are more prepared. Arming yourself with knowledge can help you to navigate these situations the right way.

Understanding field sobriety tests

A field sobriety test is a set of three tests designed to detect inebriation. An officer will perform them if they suspect that you are under the influence while driving. In Georgia, if an officer reasonably believes that a motorist is under the influence they can conduct this set of tests. They will have to specify this in a police report. Along with that, if they are ever questioned they will have to state why they believed that there was reason to be suspicious of inebriation.

Understanding DUIs

If an officer conducts a field sobriety test and determines that you are under the influence, then it could contribute to you getting a DUI. What you may not realize, though, is that it is not necessarily required to take a field sobriety test. While there may be penalties for refusing blood alcohol tests or breathalyzer tests, you may refuse a field sobriety test.

When you get pulled over, you may feel a lot of stress, and be uncertain about how to handle the situation. The reality is, though, that the more you know about field sobriety tests, the easier it will be for you to protect yourself.
